If prostate cancer has already metastasized to lymph nodes or bones to the time of the diagnosis, a local treatment such as operation or radiotherapy will be inadequate because metastases can develop simultaneously at several sites in the body. In most cases the doctor would therefore recommend hormone therapy, which happens to affect the whole body. Hormones are chemical messengers the body produces to influence all sorts of bodily functions. Hormones also regulate the development and function of the sex organs - and therewith the prostate, too.
